Methane

Methane

March 30th, 2023, Sioux Falls, SD –

Methane (CH4) is a single-carbon alkaline and the main constituent of natural gas (roughly 95%). It is used as a common fuel source in many types of applications.

Methane (CH4) is a colorless, odorless gas with flammability limits in the air of 5.3% to 15%. Utility Natural Gas is almost pure Methane mixed with ethane, propane, butane, and pentane. The smell of natural gas is a “Mercaptan odorant.”

Common Applications

Boiler Rooms

The first concern is a natural gas leak occurring and going undetected. In the event of a gas leak, a build-up can occur, increasing the risk of an explosion and potentially posing significant damage and loss of life.

Restaurant / Kitchen

Another application is restaurants/commercial kitchens. Appliances in kitchens such as grills, stoves, and fryers are often using natural gas and/or propane as their heating source.

Residential

Gases of concern could be combustible gases such as propane or methane (natural gas); these gases can be found using appliances that require heating and cooling, such as a stove, fireplace, or furnace.

Landfills

Due to the dangers of methane seeping through the ground, the need to monitor methane levels is being required. The decomposition of garbage results in both Methane and Hydrogen Sulfide being by-products in these environments.
